Landmark Project

Working in Corian, Amanda Levete created this alluring structure by thermoforming the material into tiles for the London Design Festival's Size + Matter commissions at the South Bank. The tiles could then be connected in a variety of forms, exploring the boundaries of the material's potential.

Formerly founder of the visionary architecture practice Future Systems, often quoted as 'laying down the agenda for architecture in the 21st century', Levete won the Sterling Prize for the Media Centre at Lords and has been responsible for many influential structures such as the Floating Bridge in the Docklands and the extraordinary Selfridges building in Birmingham. She founded Amanda Levete Architects in 2009. Amanda Levete said: 'The project Size + Matter was commissioned by Ben Evans who is the director of the London Design Festival. It was about the idea of taking a material and exploring it in ways that haven't been done before, so that you push its boundaries both technically and aesthetically. 'For me that was really interesting because there was no brief in terms of its function, it was really a very abstract way of looking at something. So I thought I could explore the ideas that I am looking at in buildings at a scale that's really large; that is somewhere in between a building and a piece of furniture.'
