Renowned designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby of Barber Osgerby open up about their lives and careers.
Their work encompasses furniture, lighting and product design as well as art and architectural-scale projects. In conversation with Grant Gibson, they discuss meeting at the Royal College of Art and nearly being kicked out; their thoughts on the 'toxicity’ of contemporary design; how the British design scene has changed since they emerged in the ’90s; the importance of collaboration; and their obsession with making.
They also talk about the creation of the Olympic torch for the 2012 Games, and the thinking behind their revolutionary Tip Ton chair for Vitra. Listen here.
As part of Brompton Design District for London Design Festival 2019, SEE••DS Gallery presented Masters of Disguise. The exhibition interpreted the District's theme, Nature/Nurture, by looking at the notion of human nature in the current era of hyper-visibility and culture of image obsession.
Curated by M–L–XL, Masters of Disguise explored individual identity, display and performance as represented by the mask. The designers, including Nathalie Du Pasquier, Jochen Holz, Martino Gamper, Michael Marriott, Soft Baroque and Sabine Marcelis, each created a mask which was then surrounded by objects they made, including furniture, lights, tableware, cutlery, glasses and vases.
The exhibition can be viewed online here.
