For one evening during London Design Festival, Hackney Downs Studios invites the public behind the scenes with a curated selection of resident designers. Marking the first time in seven years that we have presented a studio-led showcase, the evening spans objects, spaces, publishing, performance and more.
Design Selects brings together a selection of Hackney Downs Studios residents working across collectible design, ceramics, publishing, events and audiovisual performance. For one evening, visitors are invited into their spaces to discover new work, works in progress and the ideas and processes behind them.
Village Meeting. Hosted by All Ears, curated by OP-OV. A group show of collectible design objects by thirty London-based artists, hosted in the All Ears workshop and at The Gallery at Hackney Downs Studios. Founded by Julia B Lubner and Jan Stawiarski, All Ears creates functional art objects using processes including woodworking, metalwork and beading, while its studio also operates as a space for workshops and events. The exhibition is curated by OP-OV, Demi Oyeyinka’s research-led practice spanning product, furniture and spatial design.
Agüita: Agüita will create a sculptural, interactive table installation in one of the studios. With a background in design and styling, its events bring together food, music and storytelling, using the table as a starting point for gathering, conversation and connection.
Boso Studio: Ania Perkowska of Boso Studio presents Quiet Corners: Ceramics for Peaceful Living, a collection exploring geometric form, organic texture and the raw qualities of clay. Minimal decoration allows the surfaces and tactile details of each piece to come forward, inviting visitors to look closely, touch and handle the work.
Curata: Robyn Yeang, founder of Curata, presents Cowboy Crockery, a collection of handmade and hand-painted ceramic tableware inspired by cowboy culture and the American West. The display will also include original ink paintings, art prints and a live painting session, with works available to purchase.
Guest Editions: Guest Editions will showcase its latest titles alongside its full catalogue of artist books and limited editions, with a visual presentation offering a closer look at the book design and production process. The independent publisher works collaboratively with visual artists across contemporary art, social documentary and wider visual culture.
The Hackney Room: The Hackney Room presents an evening of experimental audiovisual performance. Visitors will enter a space of ambient sound and low lighting before a short film and main performance combining sound and image, followed by an opportunity for audience response and conversation.
Kotani: Kotani will show a new ceramic collection alongside an insight into the everyday process of running a shared pottery studio. Visitors can explore everything from glaze mixing and the development of functional forms to furniture designed specifically for the studio and its community.
Studio Ojo & Luana Meneux Studio: Studio Ojo and Luana Meneux Studio are independent furniture and product designers who share a studio at Hackney Downs Studios. For Design Selects, they will present finished pieces, new work and works in progress, bringing together individual projects and collaborative experiments in a jointly curated installation.
