Dedicated to the 931 handbag, designed in 1963 by Dieter Rams for his wife, bag maker TSATSAS and makers of long-living furniture Vitsœ are coming together for a special exhibition and pop-up shop, celebrating years of mutual appreciation and a shared design philosophy.
Originally designed in 1963 by Dieter Rams, one of today’s most influential industrial designers, the 931 handbag impresses with a timeless and minimalistic shape. Based on Rams’ original design, the bag was refined by TSATSAS and produced for the first time 55 years later. The bag was designed by Dieter Rams for his wife Ingeborg, whom he met in 1955 when she was working for Braun as a photographer. It was while working for Braun himself, where he was chief designer from 1961 until 1995, that Rams engaged more strongly with the material leather, collaborating with leather crafting workshops in Offenbach/Main, Germany, for the company’s shaver cases. And it was there that he had the idea of surprising his wife with a leather bag, yet it remained a one-off. In 2018, German fine bag maker TSATSAS introduced this very bag in collaboration with Dieter Rams to the market. The label’s design philosophy – to create timeless bags and accessories with a clear design language that give rise to lasting shapes without any aesthetic expiry date – was easy to reconcile with Rams’ expectations of a product. So reduced and simultaneously concise that it unavoidably calls to mind Rams products, 931 is as up-to-date today as it was in 1963 and effortlessly bridges five decades of design history. On the occasion of the London Design Festival 2025, TSATSAS is presenting the story behind the bag at the store of Vitsœ in Marylebone, offering insights into the project and its handcrafted production in TSATSAS' family-owned leather goods workshop in Frankfurt/Main, Germany.
