V&A Innovate challenges young people to be the changemakers the world needs. This National Schools Challenge invites students in Years 7, 8 and 9 to step into the shoes of designers and solve a real-world problem that requires fresh thinking and imagination.

In 2020-2021 students from all over the country tackled one of two challenges, inspired by the V&A’s collections, each relating to pressing issues shaping our world: HOME how might we create more accessible and environmentally friendly homes? COMMUNITY how might we bring people together to create more accessible and environmentally friendly communities? This display features the top ten design solutions they developed, which were pitched to a panel of industry judges with winning teams receiving awards and prizes for their school. Against the backdrop of an incredibly challenging year for schools and young people, students presented inspiring projects that aim to forge community and collaboration and that thoughtfully foreground sustainable ways to live in the world. V&A Innovate aims to inspire the next generation of designers, makers, and innovators, and support young people to develop essential skills for the future workplace and a flourishing creative life, including critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.
