The Shop welcomes back the French designers behind the much-admired journal Typologie. This time their attentions are on camping tents. Artefacts and photography expose the inventive systems that make these protective yet precarious temporary structures both highly functional and visually satisfying.
After beloved exhibitions on The Pétanque Ball, The Wine Bottle and The Cork, the Typologie team of French designers returns to the London Design Festival with The Camping Tent. As is characteristic of Typologie projects, historic collections lie at the core of this exhibition. Model tents and archival pegs are complemented by a photographic study of tents from around the world. The exhibition’s variety of material illuminates this ubiquitous typology, which has become a familiar motif in both rural and urban landscapes. Halfway between the architecture we manipulate and the furniture we live in, the tent covers a wide range of uses and unites heterogeneous realities. Reminiscent of primitive huts, descended from military encampments, shelter for leisure or refuge, precarious yet resistant, protective yet porous, tents are used in both particular and extreme environments. Simply assembled from ultra-high-performance materials, they are designed in the West and produced in Southeast Asia. The tent’s apparent simplicity is deceptive. Even more than the single-material objects studied in previous Typologie projects, this composite object makes us aware of the complex nature of the things that surround us. The latest issue of the Typologie journal, entitled The Camping Tent, accompanies the exhibition.
