Serap Ekizler Sönmez

Serap Ekizler Sönmez is a researcher, artist, and academic working in the field of interior design, integrating her artistic practice with scholarly research. After graduating in Chemistry from Marmara University and working in the chemical industry, she continued her long-standing engagement with painting and traditional arts, receiving extensive training in various studios. Alongside her atelier-gallery experience, she has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions.

She completed her MA in Islamic History and Arts at Marmara University and earned her PhD in History at Yeditepe University with high honors and a full scholarship. She currently continues her academic work at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University, Interior Design Program.

For over fifteen years, she has been engaged in the study, production, and teaching of Islamic geometric patterns. Her work is grounded in establishing a structural relationship between traditional knowledge and contemporary design thinking. She has conducted extensive field research, examining historical monuments across a wide geography, particularly in the Islamic world. She is the author of several comprehensive, encyclopedic volumes in her field, contributing both to academic discourse and design practice.
