Justina Alexandroff

Justina Alexandroff is an interdisciplinary designer and researcher working across materials and biodiversity issues.
Her project Faux Flora responds to the ecological impact of air pollution on floral scent, making it difficult for insect pollinators to locate essential plants. The project proposes an artificial flower system that acts as a beacon for pollinators navigating polluted environments, developed in collaboration with NICE Lab (Bangalore). It incorporates Aditi Mishra's PhD research that a pollinator identifies a flower by three traits: radial symmetry, sweet scent and a reflective surface.
The 3D-printed prototypes enhance these signals through geometry, an optical coating mimicking real petals, and scent molecules chosen for stability in polluted air.
Developed during her MA in Material Futures at Central Saint Martins, the project won the Mills Fabrica Innovation Award and the Chancery Rosewood Creative Transformation Award.
She currently works in R&D for biomaterial packaging with Carbon Cell, and has worked extensively with ethical fashion collective Colèchi, researching the relationship between textiles, biobased materials and farming.
