The Open University

The Open University (OU) introduces the Bachelor of Design (BDes), launching in October 2024. This innovative degree leverages the OU’s expertise in distance design education to meet the growing demand for creative, problem-solving graduates. The BDes teaches design-led thinking across diverse contexts, enabling students to develop a unique design identity. Emphasising professional design expertise, the BDes is recognised globally, akin to a BEng, and signifies specialist understanding and aptitude. This programme explores creative thinking and professional competencies, highlighting design as a catalyst for societal change. Students will gain core design skills and the opportunity to experiment, preparing them for careers in various sectors, including product, spatial, and service design, as well as health, education, and media. The new degree complements the existing BSc/BA in Design & Innovation, which combines core design learning with other subjects.
