Cem Yılmaz

Cem Yılmaz co-founded KEYM with his partner İsmail Çakal in 2011 to contribute the process of urban renewal in Turkey. In 2014, they worked on the first urban regeneration masterplan in Istanbul, with an international team led by Foster and Partners, and in 2017 created the first urban renewal strategy for the Turkish Ministry of Urbanism. Since 2015, KEYM has played a leading role in planning and social engagement studies in disaster zones including Cizre, Elazığ and İzmir. Since 2020 KEYM’s focus has shifted to post-disaster planning for metropolitan areas, leading to Yılmaz’s involvement with the design-led revitalisation effort following the devastating February 2023 earthquake. Yılmaz is a graduate of Istanbul Technical University’s Urban and Regional Planning Department. He acquired his Masters in Urban Planning from Mimar Sinan University, and in 2018 undertook a PhD there. He is currently writing his thesis, titled Post Disaster Recovery: City of Hatay.
