In collaboration GF Smith, architecture and landscape practice Root And Erect presents a community-led celebration of the power of paper and pattern.
Root And Erect’s 3D Sculpture and Paper workshop is the second in Westminster City Council and Portman Estate’s programme of four public-realm activations centred on Nutford Place in Marylebone, designed to connect with the local community and the rich heritage of the area. Following artist Lacey Ferri’s pattern-drawing workshop on 6 September, Root And Erect invites people of all ages to create 3D paper sculptures inspired by Ferri’s ‘Seed of Creation’ carpet patterns and based on Villarceau circles – the geometric shapes created by obliquely bisecting the form of a torus. Participants will be encouraged to discuss their hopes for the neighbourhood on their sculptures, and will be free to take smaller sculptures home, or to leave larger versions behind to be hung from magnolia trees in an evolving decorative backdrop for Nutford Place. The workshop is both an exercise in community engagement and a showcase of sustainability. To create the sculptures, GF Smith is providing a selection of papers that represent the leading edge of low-carbon material innovation and circular production strategy. These include GF Smith Offcut, which is made using a combination of repulped in-house production waste, offcuts and leftover papers, as well as Notpla Seaweed Paper – a recyclable, compostable paper created using a byproduct of seaweed processing. By making use of a material conventionally consigned to waste, Notpla closes the loop on the seaweed industry, while benefitting aesthetically from the material’s distinctive veining and texture. The workshop is on Sunday 14 September, 11am–2pm (sign up via Eventbrite, pre-registration recommended but not required) For the remainder of the week there will be other workshops, including an after-school play day for local primary school children on Friday 19 September, 3.30–6.30pm Eventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/designing-the-magic-carpet-4556433
