Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers is delighted to present a distinguished selection from the renowned collection of David Rapley, showcasing exceptional works in silver and gold, with a special emphasis on the artistry of master silversmith Stuart Devlin.
A passionate collector for over 25 years, Rapley’s interest was sparked by acquiring a rare Devlin silver-gilt egg. Recognising Devlin’s originality and imagination, he built what is believed to be one of the largest private Devlin collections in the UK, including unique and specially commissioned pieces. Alongside Devlin, the exhibition showcases works by Christopher Nigel Lawrence, as well as Scandinavian makers such as David Andersen and Marius Hammer, reflecting the breadth and sophistication of Rapley’s collection. Stuart Devlin (1931–2018), renowned for his distinctive biomorphic designs and innovative use of silver, gilt, and filigree, was appointed Goldsmith and Jeweller to Queen Elizabeth II in 1982. His work, ranging from intricate objets d’art to striking functional pieces, continues to be celebrated for its creativity and craftsmanship.
