AiM's 'In Progress' modelmaking exhibition opens at Material Source Studio London for LDF 2026, followed by a talk on 16 September exploring how physical models shape architecture before it gets built.
Material Source Studio London hosts its first London Design Festival exhibition this September, launching 'In Progress' in partnership with AiM, the Architects Index of Modelmaking.
From Monday 14 September, the exhibition brings architectural models never before shown in public to 120 Saffron Hill. It traces how architects communicate ideas through physical models, from early concept through to finished building.
This is the next chapter in an ongoing partnership. Making Matters, the first exhibition with AiM, welcomed thousands of visitors to our Manchester Studio earlier this year. In Progress extends that relationship into a 3-year exhibition and events programme: opening in London for LDF 2026, travelling to the 2027 Venice Architecture Biennale, and returning to Material Source Studio Manchester in 2028.
In Progress is led by the B.15 Modelmaking Workshop at Manchester School of Architecture, delivered with Material Source Studio, the European Cultural Centre, Manchester Society of Architects, and Sixteen3.
"Design is not linear and the role of the model in developing our understanding as we work through problems is unique."

Talk: Before It Gets Built - A conversation towards 2028:
Following the opening, join us on Wednesday 16 September, 17:30, at Material Source Studio London for a panel discussion on the latest AiM exhibition. Representatives from the European Cultural Centre Italy and a selection of contributors will focus on the models behind current projects, and how much of what gets built is shaped by what happens along the way.
