Chair and Its fragments

From the 19th of Sept – 22nd of Sept., Objets Mito is excited to unveil, for the first time, a sculptural chair designed by Abid Javed during the London Design Festival. The objects in an installation will be showcased at Rialto - a new design hub in the heart of Hackney, East London. Combining the biomorphic sculptural language developed at the studio of Abid Javed inspired by biology together with surrealist elements, the chair is another foray from the studio into sculptural design. The chair design is minimalist, biomorphic and form based, taking reference from organic shapes of genetic elements inside the mitochondria. Presented as a statement piece, it is both functional and a piece of sculpture, handmade in a limited edition of 10. The visual quality of the design is intentional for it to transform interior spaces. With it, the show will present a collection of objects that take the structural elements of the chair out of the chair, deconstructed (like meat off the bone), into individual sculptural objects, including ceramic stools, wall art and sculptures. The collection is designed and handmade in the material rooted to the sculpture practice which is clay, expressing and utilising the properties of the material - on what it can be and do in design. Each form is handmade using a combination of pinch, coil and slab methods and then sculpted before firing the objects in a kiln to stoneware quality. Continuing from the narrative of exploring mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell) as a structural landscape since the launch of Objets Mito in May 2024, the design show will explore the interplay between sculpture and function into design, envisioning how alien-like yet beautiful biology can be, when conceived and realised in interior spaces. Launch Event Viewers will be invited to a launch party event at Rialto on the 19th Sept., where the interior space will host the launch of the new collection. Throughout the duration of the show, visitors will be able to experience the objects first hand and find out more about the design process behind the objects.
