This is a public seating stool made from cane and coconut husk fibre made by Interior Designer Ashna Mohammed Shakir. The project reinterprets an agricultural by-product as a contemporary seating material, combining local material knowledge with lightweight construction and circular design principles.

A contemporary public seating stool that explores the transformation of coconut husk fibre into a tactile and functional seating material. The stool combines a lightweight cane structure with a seating surface made from coconut husk fibre, bringing together a renewable agricultural by-product and a traditional natural material within a contemporary public furniture typology. The design explores how materials that are often overlooked or treated as waste can be given a new life through thoughtful design and craft. The cane frame provides a lightweight structural system, while the coconut fibre creates a textured seating surface designed for everyday interaction. With a focus on responsible material use, repairability and circular thinking, the stool is designed so that its components can be maintained, repaired or replaced independently, extending the life of the product rather than treating it as disposable.
