Playfool is the recipient of V&A’s annual Emerging Design Commission. Through a newly commissioned experimental game experience, Daniel Coppen and Saki Maruyama explore the role of human labour in the age of AI acceleration, drawing on the habitual act of object cleaning at the V&A.
Our online lives unfold as a constant stream of stimulation. Behind this restless surface lies a quiet physical infrastructure. Data centres keep the digital world running, and the AI race has accelerated their construction. Nearly 100 new facilities are planned in the UK alone, most to be completed by 2030. Highly automated, Playfool delves into the one task that still resists automation entirely: cleaning.
Through alternative game design approaches, Playfool encourages visitors to explore the act of cleaning that sustains both the museum and the AI models, reflecting on what we ignore in the pursuit of progress.
