Textiles Designed by Emerging Designer Lifeng Liao Showcased at the Group Exhibition Curated by Arts Archive London at The Handbag Factory
Lifeng Liao's textile design series Salomé draws inspiration from Oscar Wilde's timeless play of the same name. In her reinterpretation, Salomé evolves from a passive subject of the gaze into its active wielder. The structural oppression of gender and class transforms her into a 'mad woman', reclaiming power through subversion. She reimagined the theatrical textiles for the Dance of the Seven Veils, where Salome wields her lethal beauty and charm as weapons to pursue her prey: Saint John. Drawing inspirations from ancient Middle Eastern patterns, she deconstructed and reinterpreted them, integrating repeated 'eye' motifs to symbolise the omnipresent gaze in this play. Both works on display are entirely hand-dyed and hand-printed using a range of silk-screen techniques.
