A set of 6 tethered masses orbit a central pole, Spin Phase [Planar] captures the balance between machine precision and natural chaos.
Repeating cycles shape our behaviour and environment, from the rotation of the Earth, to the beat of the heart, much of what we perceive and experience moves back and forth with a regular pattern. Spin Phase [ Planar ] explores the kinetic beauty of phasing cycles through sculpture. Six suspended masses orbit around a central axis, each tethered by a cable and trailing a flowing ribbon. In sets of two, opposing masses are coupled to a motorised spinning mechanism which allows the independent adjustment of their respective orbit speeds. Centripetal acceleration enables the sculpture to shift form, with higher rotational speeds expanding the orbits, while lower speeds allow the tethers to droop. Through time the spin module speeds are slowly shifted, allowing the sculpture to express both moments of synchronicity and swirling chaos. Spin Phase [ Planar ] explores the interplay between the control of mechanical components and the irregularity of airflow. This dynamic behaviour produces a subtle acoustic layer, with the sound directly responding to the shifting choreography of ribbons and unpredictable gestures. Spin Phase [ Planar ] is the latest edition of Kai Lab’s explorations of phase relationships in cyclical systems. An ongoing research project delving into the relevance of cyclical systems and phase patterns in both our daily lives and the natural world. Presented as part of the Material Matters programme for the London Design Festival 2025, Spin Phase [Planar] is installed in the iconic Brutalist architecture of Space House, Holborn.
