Standard Medium reimagines ceramic extrusion as furniture. First developed for architectural façades, the material’s rich textures and colour depths are brought into interiors through a series of tables that explore the dialogue between material surfaces and colours.
Standard Medium is a collection of furniture made from ceramic extrusions. Traditionally used for architectural façades in public spaces, this ceramic offers a natural yet highly durable surface. The industrial material retains a rich irregular texture and colours with beautiful depths specific to enamel finishes. The project explores the tension between clay—an elemental, almost primal material—and the standardised, beam-like form it acquires through the process of industrial extrusion. For this project, Alexandra Gerber, decided to limit herself to use only the 50x50mm beam like profile, almost like an elementary building block for her furniture. For London Design Festival, Alexandra Gerber presents the second part of this research: a series of tables in different formats that combines the ceramic extrusions with other materials. The focus lies on the interplay between textures, surfaces and colours. This project is part of the ongoing Standard Medium series, first shown at Raw Senses (Zurich, 2023) and later at Second Nature Projects (Zurich, 2024/25). The ceramic components are made from reclaimed overstock sourced from a German factory producing façade systems and they are combined with other materials like Faust linoleum, glass and tiles.
