The Old Fire Station Stoke Newington - Community Open Afternoon
History
The Old Fire Station is a vibrant community building in the heart of Stoke Newington and is home to a number of charities and not-for-profit groups and organisations that provide services for the benefit the local people of Hackney. It is also a place where local people can run and attend community classes and events, and somewhere for you to host a children’s party, family gathering or special event. It has been a community centre since 1982
Community open afternoon
Get to know more about what goes on here at our amazing, grassroots community building that served as a working Firestation from 1886 until the late 1970's and opened as a community centre in 1982 after local campaigning. All ages welcome, there will be music and games, tasty-pay what you can- seasonal food and drink as well as informal, behind the scenes building tours, and archive materials on display. Find out more about our history of firefighting and beyond -and what's happening now including the new community darkroom space - and become part of our story!
Our open house afternoon will include archive material collected as part of our ongoing research into the community history of the Old Fire Station highlighting the stories of working people from a diversity of backgrounds with longstanding connections to this unique grassroots Community Centre, as well as opportunities to get involved in what happens here now!
Informal building tours
We will be running impromptu building tours during the course of the event; please note this will be over a number of different levels, including one narrow staircase; as there are some uneven flooring surfaces, please wear sensible footwear ( no high heels)
