Travel Light: Slancha takes over the Hox Shop

Earlier this year, Slancha put out an international open call asking emerging designers to respond to a simple brief: what does it mean to Travel Light in 2026? More than 200 submissions landed from over 20 countries, spanning furniture, lighting, textiles, objects and material innovation. Now, Slancha and The Hoxton have whittled them down to a final collection of objects that will take over the hotel’s Hox Shop throughout London Design Festival, from 12-20 September. Designed to be packed, collected and lived with, the 12-piece collection puts a new spin on the objects, rituals and details that shape a journey and hotel stay. Highlights include a flat-pack lamp made in Hackney; a tiny vase cast directly from a British water mains cover; a pocket-sized ice cream spoon inspired by theatre ice cream tubs and seaside spades; and a sculptural wooden take on that classic hotel keepsake, the branded matchbox. Travel Light brings together work by Josh Page Studio, Jake Robertson Studio, Omi Collective, Katia Lyubavskaya, B.C. Joshua, THISISBYRON, Maxim Lester, D.V. Lierop, Studio Ojo, Lewis Duckworth and George Exon. Expect reclaimed London timber, sand-cast aluminium and playful takes on familiar everyday objects, with every piece available to buy from the Hox Shop, open 24/7 throughout LDF. Slancha will also create a specially curated still-life installation in the lobby, sitting alongside furniture and objects from its wider creative community and turning the heart of The Hox into a living showcase of contemporary design. Travel Light continues beyond the Hox Shop with a programme of events throughout London Design Festival. Hox Talks returns for its third edition, hosted by Duncan Riches, creative director and founder of design gallery Unit.d. Following conversations with Jutta Goessl of Odd Universe and Nina Woodcroft of Nina+Co earlier in the year, the next edition will see Duncan chatting to Finn Thomson and Freya Bolton of design studio and workshop Mitre & Mondays. exploring the thinking and processes they apply to create physical space and the importance of helping people connect with the material world around them. Together, they’ll explore the thinking and processes behind their approach to making, from designing for disassembly to regenerative materials, and the importance of reconnecting people with the material world around them. There’ll also be an opportunity to get hands-on with a free workshop hosted by London-based designer and artist George Exon, whose pocket-sized ice cream spoons feature in the Travel Light collection. With a practice characterised by experimentation, bold forms and a playful approach that embraces silliness as a serious design methodology, George will invite guests to create their own fridge magnets, sharing some of the techniques and ideas that shape his work. The workshop will take place at The Hoxton, Shoreditch on Friday 18th September from 2pm, with free tickets available on a first come, first served basis.
