This installation explores how landscape architecture can support biodiversity, ecological connectivity and public engagement. Using the hedgehog as a flagship species, it reimagines urban public space as a shared habitat where people and wildlife can coexist.
Urban Living Library - Reclaiming the Hedgehog Habitat is a landscape installation that explores how cities can become healthier environments for both people and wildlife.
The project responds to the rapid decline of the European hedgehog by using it as a flagship species for urban biodiversity. Rather than treating nature as something separate from the city, the installation demonstrates how landscape architecture can reconnect fragmented habitats while creating engaging public spaces for learning, wellbeing and everyday interaction with nature.
Through immersive planting, habitat structures and ecological storytelling, visitors are invited to experience the city as a shared ecosystem. The project encourages discussion around biodiversity, climate resilience and the role of design in supporting more-than-human communities.
The installation was awarded First Prize in the 2025 IFLA Europe Student and Young Professionals Competition (Category A – Conceptual Projects/Ideas) and is presented as part of the London Design Festival 2026 to engage a wider public audience in conversations about ecological futures.
