Ways of Being.

Ways of Being is a multidisciplinary exhibition presented at Work and Project in Archway during the London Design Festival. Bringing together photography, moving image and installation, it examines how design shapes the ways we live, produce, consume and coexist. The exhibition begins from the understanding that the ecological crisis is not an isolated environmental problem. It is closely connected to urban development, the movement of resources, technological change, systems of production and social relations. In this context, sustainability is neither a fixed answer nor a visual style, but an ongoing question of how everyday life is organised and shaped. The exhibition builds on the Climate and Sustainability Photography Competition previously developed in connection with climate weeks in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. Ways of Being continues this engagement with environmental issues while expanding the conversation from photography to moving image and spatial practice. Here, design is not limited to the production of objects, nor is it presented as a complete answer to the ecological crisis. Instead, it offers a way to make systems visible and to imagine other possibilities. Design decisions influence the materials we use, how long objects last, how spaces are shared, and the relationships formed between people, places and other forms of life. The participating works approach these questions through different visual and sensory languages. Photography records traces of environmental change; moving image reveals slow and often unnoticed processes; and installation transforms questions of materials, waste, resource extraction and circulation into spatial experiences. Together, the works bring distant or abstract ecological concerns into experiences that can be directly felt. Rather than offering a single solution, Ways of Being creates a space for reflection and conversation. It invites visitors to reconsider the connections between everyday choices and larger systems, and to explore how design might contribute to more responsible, equitable and caring ways of living. The exhibition asks not only what kind of future we want, but how we might begin to inhabit it.
