Caged or Carried

Caged or Carried is the first exhibition by ESTRA, a London design lab. At its centre is The Vertebra – an object that wears its structure on the outside, unapologetically. It is the first of a category we call the Tectonic Object, whose structure bears both physical load and meaning. A metal frame, placed in full view, holds a piece of soft leather. Because the frame bears the load, the leather bears none. Freed from any structural role, it is left to do the one thing structure cannot: receive time. It will soften, mark, and darken with handling, until no two examples remain alike. One material is permanent; the other, living. The quiet tension between the two materials raises a question: is the leather caged, or carried – confined, or embraced? This is an unsettled question. So, we invite you to come and make your own judgement. Across three parts – Encounter, Proof, and Archive – you will meet The Vertebra, look closely, and add your own reading to a public vote that stays open throughout the Festival. Your reading will join everyone else’s and become part of the record of The Vertebra's birth. ESTRA works through enquiry – research, experiment, and open discussion – into the relationships we live among but rarely examine. Caged or Carried is our first step into the world, and we hope you will think alongside us as it continues. The Vertebra makes its debut in Knightsbridge, ten minutes down the road from the V&A, and a stone's throw from Hyde Park, where the 1851 Great Exhibition was held, celebrating the belief that industry and design belong together.
