Combining cartographers’ exactitude with nuanced landscape interpretation Loraine Rutt works primarily in porcelain. a.k.a. The Little Globe Co her pieces record human interactions with place, from hyper-local geography to lunar explorations. Visit the studio to see an exhibition of work in progress and for sale.
In addition to lunar cartography commissioned by Astronaut Col Al Worden to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 15, Loraine's recent work examines Early Modern explorations. Working in collaboration with TIDE Project Oxford University scholars Dr Lauren Working and Dr Emily Stevenson she has created new work inspired by the Molyneux Globes for the exhibition 'From Middle Temple to Manoa'. TIDE is an ERC funded project researching Travel, Transculturality, and Identity in England, c. 1550 – 1700. Loraine has made ceramics that respond to the selected texts that explore the desire for commodities and world knowledge in this period, and consider the enduring geopolitics of trade and influence of maps on our world view. By recreating this exhibition in her atmospheric railway arch studio she enables visitors to see these new pieces alongside facsimiles of the Stuart and Jacobean books selected by TIDE Project along with their academic catalogue. The Museum of London recently purchased Loraine's Modern Booth Triptych (Have and Have Not pictured) for permanent display at the new Smithfields site. The pieces form part of the exhibition 'London Making Now' open from 24th September at London Wall.
