Patch Design presents the 'Marine Pavilion', designed by director Naixin Shi using local discarded fishing nets and retired bamboo. This project repurposes materials amidst declining fishing practices and an aging village, honoring community heritage while demonstrating their dedication to sustainable architecture.
Patch Design presents its completed temporary architecture project, the "Marine Pavilion," designed by design director Naixin Shi using discarded fishing nets and retired bamboo collected from the village, where these materials were formerly used by local fishermen. Embracing sustainable practices, this project underscores Patch Design's commitment to repurposing discarded materials and minimizing environmental impact. With traditional fishing practices declining and the village population predominantly elderly fishermen, dwindling due to reduced interest from younger generations, many of these nets have been abandoned. The nets were meticulously arranged in a staggered formation, adjusting the height of the bamboo to evoke the appearance of fishing boat sails and village rooftops, paying homage to the disappearing traditional fishing village. This project signifies Patch Design's pioneering use of flexible materials in spatial construction, offering an economical and sustainable solution to create a meaningful temporary space for the fishing community. In this exhibition, the project is showcased through photographs, videos, models, and derivative furniture pieces.
