‘Objects of Pain’ is a practice-research study, exploring how wearables can materialise narratives of chronic pain, preciousness, and wellbeing. The exhibition showcases handcrafted artefacts made for individuals living with chronic pain, revealing how objects can embody resilience and express lived experience.

Through conversations with individuals living with chronic pain - jewellery and wearable artefacts have been crafted to carry memories, metaphors, and moments of resilience. Each piece is rooted in dialogue, emerging from semi-structured interviews that explored preciousness, attachment to objects and wellbeing. Handmade using a combination of traditional jewellery techniques and digital processes, these objects take the form of contemporary amulets - personal, symbolic, and emotionally resonant. They translate lived experiences into tactile and visual language, reflecting expressions of strength and hope. Alongside each artefact, anonymised and annotated excerpts from the participants offer glimpses into the words and images that shaped the making process. Created by Hannah Pittman as part of her MA in Academic Practice at the University of the Arts London, the work draws on her own 15-year experience of chronic pain. Rather than seeking to represent pain, it aims to honour its complexity and resilience of participants. Visitors are invited to consider how objects might serve as vessels for care, connection, and solidarity - quiet companions in the ongoing strength of living with pain.
