Landmark Project 'Pavilions of Wonder' by Nina Tolstrup of Studiomama, presented by Mattel, Inc.’s Barbie® and Visit Greater Palm Springs, is a groundbreaking installation on the Strand Aldwych.
The installation fuses the vibrant essence of the Barbie DreamHouse with Greater Palm Springs' iconic midcentury modernism, showcasing how the architecture of the Barbie DreamHouses has been inspired by this Californian oasis through three captivating, interactive pavilions. Visitors of all ages are invited to step into a world where playful design meets desert modernism. Barbie, the #1 doll in the world and a global design icon, is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. The DreamHouse, introduced in 1962, is as iconic as the doll itself, and has captured the evolution of architecture and interiors, encapsulating the spirit of various eras. Greater Palm Springs, renowned as the "US Capital of Modernism," is synonymous with recreational charm, a laid-back attitude, and a rich design and pop culture legacy. Celebrated architects such as E. Stewart Williams, Albert Frey, and Richard Neutra have left an indelible mark on the region. Visitors are invited to explore lush gardens, historical vignettes, and kaleidoscopic effects, with each pavilion offering a unique, immersive experience celebrating these enduring design icons. By day, discover the intersection of cultural symbols and architectural heritage. By night, the illuminated structures add a magical element to London's cityscape, creating a surprising and uplifting urban intervention.
