Join artist Laura Medcalf for a hands-on Suminagashi (floating ink) workshop, exploring the meditative Japanese art of marbling on water. This ancient technique involves gently placing ink on the surface of water to create fluid, organic patterns that are then transferred onto paper.
Laura Medcalf is a British-Hungarian multidisciplinary artist whose practice is deeply rooted in collaboration with nature. She explores themes of perception, transformation, and the dynamic interplay between intention and natural forces. Working alongside different open waters around the world, Medcalf uses light-sensitive minerals, water, and organic materials gathered from the environment to create works that embody the landscape, inviting sensory experiences that transcend mere visual representation. This workshop coincides with her solo exhibition SENSE OF CALM at the Liszt Institute, Hungarian Cultural Centre London. During the workshop, the artist will also give a guided tour of her new exhibition, providing inspiration and the opportunity for a deeper understanding of her practice. Participants are then invited to explore the material poetry of water and ink through guided experimentation and gentle observation. Rooted in stillness, rhythm, and natural flow, the Suminagashi process invites a quiet space for reflection and presence.
