Synthetic Fabrics have become no1 source of microfibres. Both synthetic and natural textiles shed microfibres: whenever we wear, wash and dispose of our clothes, we shed microfibres. However, almost 70% of all textiles are synthetic and shed micro-plastics which are harmful to our environment and human health.
"Micro-Fibers : The Biggest Invisible Threat", is an immersive installation by designer, researcher, consultant and educator Katarina Rimarcikova. Through large-scale sculptural garments suspended in space, it highlights the devastating environmental and human health impacts of microplastics shed by synthetic textiles. Each garment tells a different story: a trench coat made from discarded synthetic outerwear reveals the planetary cost of our dependency on synthetics; a vibrant dress crafted from post-consumer swimwear and activewear visualizes the alarming effects of microfibres on the human body; and the ethereal Air Dress, made from biodegradable fabrics and sequins in collaboration with Sequinova, represents an alternative vision for a future beyond microplastic pollution. The installation is part of Future Fabrics Showcase by TSA and the encompassing "Urban Harvest" at Clifton House - 75-77 Worship Street, organised by Shoreditch Works London for Shoreditch Design Triangle which is listed as one of the official LDF Design Districts" for LDF 2025. *Image simulation
