As part of its journey of transformation, Olympia in west London has commissioned a new pavilion led by artist and craftsperson Rio Kobayashi and engineers Webb Yates. 'Off The Shelf' embraces this creative space in transition, offering a place where people, ideas, and even materials can meet and intermingle.

“Off The Shelf” pavilion by artist and craftsperson Rio Kobayashi showcases a timber and stone sway frame that draws inspiration from Olympia’s heritage architecture and the traditional Japanese wooden homes of Kobayashi's childhood. This design not only pays homage to the past but also integrates contemporary engineering techniques, creating a seamless blend of old and new. Remarkably, the pavilion is constructed using next to no screws, joints and material alterations, it is instead assembled from standard components that are cleverly weighted, prestressed, or clamped together, demonstrating an innovative approach to building. This method ensures stability and durability while allowing the pavilion to be easily disassembled back into its original, off-the-shelf parts, the bulk of which can be returned, reused, or resold. This approach underscores a commitment to sustainability and the circular economy, making the pavilion an exemplar of environmentally conscious design. The structural framework, echoing historical architectural styles, serves a dual purpose. It is not only a marvel of engineering but also a versatile space for observation, exhibition, and entertainment. The formal and geometric shapes of the structure set the stage for “On the Shelf”, a lively program featuring exhibitions, workshops, performances, and interventions from friends and neighbours. This program transforms the pavilion into a vibrant hub of activity, infusing the space with colour, light, and energy that transcends its grid-like design. The blend of traditional and modern elements creates a unique atmosphere that invites visitors to explore, engage, and immerse themselves in the diverse range of activities on offer. The installation will run from 14th September to 23rd February, kicking off with a captivating installation by artist and plant biologist Cynthia Fan. Fan's work, known for its exploration of the natural world and the interplay between art and science, will set the tone for the rest of the programme, inviting visitors to see the world from new perspectives and appreciate the intricate connections between art, science, and nature. Curated by Company, Place for Olympia, “Off The Shelf” and “On The Shelf” are integral parts of one of London’s most ambitious transformations. Olympia, scheduled to launch next year, is set to become a new destination for culture and creativity. This transformation will create a vibrant cultural district that fosters innovation and artistic expression, providing a new home for artists, creators, and the public to come together and experience the arts in new and exciting ways.
