For the inaugural exhibition at the 'Off the Shelf' pavilion in Olympia, west London, Cynthia Fan and Rio Kobayashi have collaborated on a series of interventions that explore and encourage closer observation of the natural world. Living sculptures will be on display for the duration of the festival.

The first exhibition at the pavilion, titled "On The Shelf," merges the creative forces of South African artist and plant biologist Cynthia Fan, based in London, alongside Rio Kobayashi. Fan, who recently earned her doctorate in plant molecular science, explores plant morphological development. Her interdisciplinary practice, influenced by her studies in Cape Town and Edinburgh, focuses on using plants and flowers to reveal their structural potential and deeper biological workings. "On The Shelf" invites visitors to immerse themselves in the natural world through living sculptures and installations that challenge traditional perceptions of art and nature. Fan and Kobayashi's collaboration celebrates the intricate beauty of the environment. These meticulously crafted living sculptures, made from organic materials, reflect the artists' shared commitment to sustainability and the cyclical nature of life. As these dynamic pieces evolve over time, they transform the pavilion into an ever-changing landscape, encouraging visitors to revisit and witness the ongoing metamorphosis. The exhibition at Olympia offers various activities designed to deepen connections with nature, including interactive workshops, guided tours, and talks that delve into the inspirations and processes behind the artworks. These events aim to foster greater environmental appreciation and promote sustainable practices in both art and daily life. The pavilion, designed by Rio Kobayashi in collaboration with Webb Yates Engineers, complements the exhibition's themes of reuse and transformation with its innovative use of prestressed timber and stone. This architectural backdrop harmonises with the natural forms and materials of the artworks, creating a seamless blend of architecture and nature. "On The Shelf" marks the beginning of Olympia’s transformation into a new destination for culture and creativity. It sets the stage for future events at the “Off the Shelf” pavilion, where art, nature, and community converge in inspiring ways. Whether you're an art enthusiast, nature lover, or simply curious, "On The Shelf" promises a unique and enriching experience to explore Fan's living sculptures and engage in the compelling activities that accompany this thought-provoking exhibition.
