Join Smruti Patel, an MA Interior Design student from UCA, on a journey of discovery and innovation as she explores different materials and transforms waste into sustainable resources for use in interior spaces.
Approximately 20% of UK waste is paper, amounting to about 5 million tonnes ending up in landfills annually. Paper can be easily crushed and recycled into new paper. Similarly, sawdust, a by-product of woodworking operations like sawing or sanding, contributes to pollution when discarded in landfills. This project investigates how material waste can be repurposed for interior use, adhering to the principles of the Circular Economy. It involves extensive research into abundantly available materials and their properties to create recyclable materials. The project focuses on creating new materials from waste, specifically paper and sawdust. By combining papier-mâché, sawdust, and acacia gum (a bio-binder), a new material is formed. The project also explores the practical applications of these new materials in interior spaces, such as walls, ceilings, and countertops.
