It’s a given that light changes space, but in Walk The Light by Dominic Harris, it was the visitor that determined the change in the lighting at the V&A Tunnel Entrance.

Visitors movement through the V&A Exhibition Road Tunnel Entrance directly controlled this innovative lighting installation in 2012. This stunning interactive lighting design project by Dominic Harris and his team at Cinimod Studio, created a band of white light that physically followed the visitor, forming a bright line of light tracking their journey. As one person passed, the white light jumped to the next arrival. Either side of the white band, washes of strong colour were pushed and pulled along the tunnel creating an ambient lighting effect that represented the overall ebb and flow of the day’s visitors. Throughout the day there was a shift in the hue and saturation of these colours as they responded to the prevailing direction of movement of the crowds. Using a combination of technologies, including thermal camera tracking and Philips LED lighting mounted on a moving monorail, Walk the Light demonstrated lighting design’s increasing sophistication as it playfully – and beautifully – transformed the experience of arriving at the museum. Supported by Philips Lighting.
